Last week Pastor John tweeted this:
Wave 1: Catholics say No to abortion. Wave 2: Evangelicals flood the land with CPC’s. Wave 3: Blacks and Latino’s bring it down.
Which prompted this excellent post by Jon Ensor: The Third Wave of the Pregnancy Help Movement. That post will help make sense of Pastor John’s tweet.
Mr. Ensor references the good that came through an ultrasound, and I agree that is a good thing in the evidence of thousands and thousands of unborn children who have been spared destruction because of ultrasounds.
But I will continue to raise this caution: when disability is found through ultrasound, babies die, including when the parents are Christians. We must bring the clear message of God’s sovereignty over all things into the ultrasound room when hard things are discovered. Parents deserve to know who God is in the midst of what many people believe are hopeless futures, for their children and for themselves.
That is why I pray there will be a fourth wave that buries the abortion industry for good. And I can see it possibly coming through the community of people with disabilities, their families and their churches that God uses to demonstrate his sovereignty and goodness and care in all things, including disability and disease, for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ.
Lord, please make it so!
My wife and I just had a beautiful baby girl. She is six weeks old today! We are both 41 years old. We had to change doctor’s because the first OBGYN practice kept talking about how we would need to have a variety of tests done because we were practically guarenteed because of our advanced maternal age to have a child with Down Syndrome or some other chromosome issue. We kept telling the doctor, it doesn’t matter, we will have the baby God gives us. His response was that you never know what you will do until you have all the information. Each test came back with good results, the doctor came back with more warnings. What really shocked me was it seemed like we were being encouraged to abort our child. Today Grace is six olds, and she is beautiful, and she is healthy! I am glad we changed doctor’s! And that we trusted and feared the Lord!
Thank you for this good, and chilling, story. That doctor did seem to focus on guaranteeing an outcome – regardless of ‘all the information’ he wanted you to have. May Grace grow in the fear and the knowledge of her God who protected her through her parents’ obedience!
I’m so glad your baby is healthy, and you found a physician comfortable delivering your baby without testing to ensure perfection.
It absolutely doesn’t justify his/her behavior, but my guess is this doctor is being driven by the fear of a lawsuit. In Ohio not too long ago, the Supreme Court upheld a successful “wrongful life” suit — in which the parents were awarded millions of dollars because their child was born with a genetic disorder that was not properly “treated” (ie: with abortion).
The malpractice litigation climate in this country is a real problem, especially for unborn children. Believing physicians, by God’s grace, can overcome the fear of lawsuits. But it truly is only by God’s grace that a physician can be freed from this fear — absent that, physicians will feel compelled to make sure “everything is perfect,” for fear of having to justify their actions to a judge and jury if things don’t go well.
The problem is our society expects life (and children) to be perfect, and if it’s not, believe there should be a defendant to compensate them with a small fortune. Until that is changed, physicians who “allow” children to be born with genetic problems will be putting their careers, professional reputations, kids’ college education, homes, etc., on the line…
THank you for this post. I agree with you.
Our son was born 29 years ago with the diagnosis of microcephaly. This was at a time prior to the use of ultrasounds and prenatal diagnosis but I imagine that today his diagnosis would be made prior to birth and abortion would be suggested.
Interestingly for us , just months before our son’s birth we attended the C.Everett Koop/Francis Schaffer seminars about life issues. Later I had the opportunity, with Dustin, to attend a speech by C. Everett Koop where he was introduced by one of his former patients, a fellow who had been born with severe birth defects.
Thanks for your blog. Anne

A good encouragement for me to go back and review what Dr. Schaffer and Dr. Koop put together! Even in the midst of all this bad news, we do have faithful men and women to thank for doing so much to preserve human life – including people with disabilities.
thankx for your blog but I still believe God can heal anybody its just a matter of time. We look at disabled children but there is a reason for that and only God knows about it. . sometimes doctors don’t know what they are talking about and that is why Jesus is mostly my doctor despite what is said. . .
The mind of God is big but it takes time and we want to rush in to everything and forget everything and have no time for God. . .
